　　科學家發表了「海洋生物普查」（Census of Marine Life），是有史以來最詳盡的海洋生物多樣性調查結果。這個普查調查的海域，主要是各國的經濟海域（exclusive economic zone），即從測算領海寬度的基線量起，不超過二百海里（370.4公里）的海域。
　　該計畫的資深科學家加拿大達爾豪斯大學的Ron O’Dor指出，人們原以為這些海域的資訊應該很完整，可是事實上卻不。他們估計，每登記的一個物種，背後可能有三四種是未知的。德州農工大學的Thomas Shirley也指出，在非洲沿岸收集到的甲殼動物，有99.3%是之前從未描述過的。而僅卅公里取得的橈足類樣本，就只有兩種是同樣的。美國國家地理學會的探險家Sylvia Earle表示，人類還有許多要學的。海洋生物保守估計有一千萬種，甚至五千萬種之多。而人類見過的海洋，僅佔了百分之五。
　　13個國家地區的委員會，包括360位科學家，收集了海洋生物多樣性的各種文獻，其中有些甚至有五百年老。這些委員會是各地區自我組織出來的，例如歐洲地區的科學家組成一個委員會，印度洋地區的是另一個。這些委員會的工作也包括保育和管理。
　　他們發現熱帶地區的珊瑚礁果然有最高的生物多樣性。有高生物多樣性的海域包括澳洲、日本、中國、地中海和墨西哥灣。而南極、南非和澳洲也有許多特有種，可是那方面的專家卻較少，影響了當地物種的有效鑑定。他們也記錄了過度捕魚、入侵種、全球暖化及海水酸化對生物多樣性的影響。
　　O’Dor表示，他們也將和「生命條碼」（barcode of life）計畫緊密合作。他們估計要花200年才能完全描述完所有物種，因此希望在完整描述它們之前，就用生命條碼的方式把它們記錄在案。但Shirley表示，由於許多物種在生態系中是重要的一環，因此把它們給鑑定出來，仍然是非常重要的。
