　　巴尼·潘諾夫斯基（保羅·吉亞瑪提 飾），一位酗酒，嗜煙，粗俗的曲棍球愛好者和電視導演，65歲的他陷入對自己人生的追憶中。在他的一生中，有成功的喜悅，但是更多是一次次挫折，一次次可笑的失態和尷尬。他與信奉自由的靈魂的第一任妻子克拉拉（蕾切爾·李費佛 飾）在羅馬相識，之後又與富有的猶太公主P夫人（明妮·德裡弗 飾）相愛，最終，他找到了真愛－－第三任妻子米利亞姆（羅莎曼德·派克 飾），並與他養育了兩個孩子。而與他的父親伊西（達斯汀·霍夫曼 飾）之間，更像是一種與助手的關係。就這樣，巴尼帶給了我們一種五彩斑斕的人生，而已到暮年的他，對於自己的人生又會有怎樣的感受呢。

幕後製作

　　加拿大作家的劇本遺作

　　1997年，加拿大作家莫德凱·裡奇勒出版了他的小說《巴尼的版本》，小說講述了一個蒙特利爾說英語的猶太人回顧一生的故事。而完成這部小說後，裡奇勒很快有了將本片搬上銀幕的想法，於是很快開始了劇本改編工作，或許他也沒有想到從改編開始，到影片啟動，花了足足12年，而他本人也在2001年去世，未能最終看到這部心愛的小說在電影院上映。而最終本片的導演則是上一部電影還是拍攝於1994年的理查德·劉易斯，不過，對於導演工作，不必懷疑他的經驗，他參與了著名美國劇集《犯罪現場調查》（2000）中44集的導演工作，不過在電影劇情片領域，《巴尼的版本》也只是他的第二部電影，這位在電視劇領域已經取得上佳成績的導演還需在電影領域證明自己。

　　文學作品改編電影一直是電影界的一大高難度工作，哪怕對於原著作者來說，莫德凱·裡奇勒也依然要謹慎行事。為此，他不得不刪除一些原著中的角色，還有些角色的戲份則需要濃縮展示，而巴尼那段原本在巴黎的波西米亞式的生活歲月，很多戲份也被調整到羅馬。對於本片，除了原著作者外，最熱心的要數製片人羅伯特·蘭托斯了，他為本片也奔波了十年之久，在裡奇勒去世後，物色一個接替的編劇成了他的最大難題，「這是一個非常複雜的狀況，因為在過去，莫迪凱·裡奇勒的小說電影改編都是由他親自完成。而當他正在進行這部小說的劇本改編時，他卻病重並離開了我們，這真的是本片拍攝的主要障礙。」，最終，他選中了邁克爾·康尼維斯，此君過去從來沒有進行過電影劇本撰寫，但是撰寫了幾部電視電影劇本的，此次擔當裡奇勒的劇本遺作延續工作，是一種榮譽，更是一種壓力。

　　還原原著特色與風格

　　沒有了原著作者指導，對於蘭托斯和劉易斯來說，對小說各種細節在電影中的處理就成了更加艱巨的挑戰。劉易斯本人也深知這點，「人們希望在電影中感受原著中的真實，這也是我的工作。我認為最重要的事就是片中的角色都要是同步的，書中的巴尼·潘諾夫斯基和電影中的巴尼·潘諾夫斯基感覺上應該是一致的。」。而作為帶有個人傳記體性質的作品，扮演巴尼的演員顯然至關重要，而巴尼本身就是一個一生中並不順風順水的角色，有些理想，又有些粗俗，而這種帶著些許小人物特色的角色，讓保羅·吉亞瑪提來扮演顯得再合適不過了。談起片中角色，吉亞瑪提最大的感受還是扮演不同年齡階段的巴尼的趣味，「這很有意思，我們首先拍攝的鏡頭是在羅馬，我的角色在片中正是最年輕的時候。我對自己的表演會感到緊張的一直是演年輕人甚於演年長者。對我來說，演年長者比年輕人容易很多，我擔心我的表演會沒有說服力，我擔心我現在都不能記住年輕人該是什麼樣子。」看來，吉亞瑪提已經將自己定義為「老人」，不過他在本片的表演實際上非常成功，成功展現了巴尼的一生，並已被提名為2011年金球獎歌舞和喜劇類最佳男主角。

　　而對於巴尼這個人本身的特點，吉亞瑪提表示，「總的來說，他是一個可愛的蠢貨。不過我不認為他是一個伍迪·艾倫電影風格的角色，但是他確實很有幽默感，一種陰暗的，自嘲的，悲觀的猶太式幽默，我認為這棒極了！」，與擔心扮演年輕狀態的吉亞瑪提不同，片中扮演巴尼父親的達斯汀·霍夫曼可輕鬆多了，對於他來說，多年的演技和生活積累，讓他扮演這樣的角色已經堪稱得心應手。而吉亞瑪提也對前輩稱讚有佳，他甚至說，如果是三十年前，達斯汀·霍夫曼來扮演這個角色會比他現在出色的多，可見兩人惺惺相惜之感。

　　一種五彩斑斕的濃縮人生

　　無論片內片外，這部電影都多少帶著傳奇的味道，巴尼的人生是傳奇而五彩斑斕的，儘管並未取得太多成就，甚至帶著失敗者的味道，但是卻以豐富的人生給觀眾一種傳奇的感受。他的人生是濃縮的，從他的愛情經歷就可以看出，從自由奔放的首任妻子，到富有的第二任妻子，直到最後的真愛，更有傳統家庭婦女味道的第三任妻子，多種風格的男女關係和愛情可謂於他一人經歷展現，正是這種人生的立體感，讓這個性格上並不討人喜歡的巴尼依然充滿了些許魅力，他的人生也依然可能有某個片段能引起你的共鳴。而本片原著作者莫德凱·裡奇勒改編未成身先死的經歷，也讓本片最終上映，有了一絲動人的溫情味道，這也是了卻了這位加拿大作家的心願。有趣的故事，神奇的人生，當然更有獲得金球提名的吉亞瑪提的出色表演，這部電影是值得你在冬日感受的一種特別的人生詮釋。

·本片是達斯汀·霍夫曼同保羅·吉亞瑪提繼《行騙天下》（2003）後第二次合作。而在片中扮演達斯汀·霍夫曼孫子的傑克·霍夫曼，在實際生活卻是霍夫曼的兒子。

·蕾切爾·李費佛為了本片也算付出了一些「損失」，為了恪守對本片參演的承諾，她不得不推掉了在人氣大作《暮色3：月食》（2010）的「維多利亞」一角。



Synopsis
Barney Panofsky is living with his best friend Boogie (Speedman) in Rome. After she tells him she is pregnant with his child, he marries the mentally disturbed and unfaithful Clara Charnofsky (Lefevre). Barney later finds out the child is not his, and he demands they separate. Clara commits suicide, and a devastated Barney decides to return home to Montreal.

Barney soon gets a job back home and meets what becomes his nameless second wife (Driver), the daughter of a wealthy Jewish family. At their lavish wedding, Barney meets Miriam Grant (Pike), and immediately falls in love. He tells Miriam his feelings for her that night but she rejects him. Despite his marriage, Barney sends Miriam flowers and gifts. Barney later picks up Boogie, who is in the middle of detox therapy, for a few days at Barney's lake house. He eventually finds Boogie sleeping with his wife. Barney is at first overjoyed that he has an excuse to divorce her and pursue Miriam, but questions Boogie's integrity. The two argue, firing rounds from Barney's gun into the air before Barney collapses onto his dock and passes out, and a drunk Boogie falls back into the lake and presumably drowns. When Barney awakens, it appears that he has shot Boogie. An abusive detective (Mark Addy) tries to beat a confession out of Barney until Barney's father, Izzy (Hoffman), intervenes.

With his divorce finalized, Barney asks Miriam out on a date. He travels to New York City to meet her, and they finally begin a relationship. They marry and have two children as Barney gets a job producing a television series. Izzy later dies in a brothel, causing Barney to laugh and cry and call his father a "King". Barney and Miriam live happily until, on another vacation to the lake house, Barney meets Blair (Bruce Greenwood), who is trying to get a job in Miriam's line of work. Both Blair and Miriam travel to the city to try and use Miriam's contacts. Barney gets drunk at a bar and ends up sleeping with a former actress on his show. Miriam finds out about her husband's infidelity and the two divorce. Miriam later marries Blair, which further deteriorates Barney.

Boogie's body is discovered and Barney is cleared of all charges. He begins to show signs of dementia, which causes his daughter to look after him. Barney realizes he is losing his memory and begs Miriam to agree to be buried next to him while they lunch at their favorite restaurant. She agrees to think about it, and begins to cry in the restroom. When she returns to the table, Barney is gone. She finds him wandering, where he begins to ramble about their life together. Barney's condition worsens until his death. The final scene shows Miriam going to his grave, leaving roses at a tombstone holding both of their names.
