Op een maandagochtend gaat de deurbel bij de jonge familieman John Felton. Voor de deur staat een vreemdeling met dure sportschoenen en een baseballpet die zichzelf voorstelt als Richie. Hij vertelt John dat hij gestrand is met zijn auto en vraagt om hulp. Een woordenwisseling bij het benzinestation leidt tot een schokkend misdrijf. Aan het einde van deze aangrijpende dag keert John terug naar huis waar hij Richie aantreft in zijn woonkamer, samen met zijn vrouw. Het kwaad is zijn leven binnengedrongen. Dit is het begin van de transformatie van een onopvallende vader van twee kinderen in een wanhopige man die tot alles in staat is om zijn familie te beschermen.
