◎簡 介
當一個成功的英國影子寫手"影子"同意為英國前首相亞當?郎寫完回憶錄的時候，他的經紀人向他保證這是他一生的一個機遇。但是從一開始這個計劃就彷彿被厄運籠罩--因為他的前任寫手，亞當?郎的長期助手麥克?艾爾從伍茲霍爾渡輪上掉下去淹死了，雖說這只是一起意外事故但是其中的頗多疑點難免讓人心生懷疑和不詳的預感。
影子在接受這份工作之後，他的女朋友就離開了他："她覺得他背叛了她，她曾經是一名黨員。"影子在隆冬季節飛到了位於美國東海岸一座島嶼上的房子開始著手這項計劃。但是就在他抵達之後的第二天，英國前外交大臣就協助中情局逮捕了亞當?郎。
因為一份他在職期間的備忘錄透露，郎犯有非法扣押恐怖分子嫌疑人並讓他們接受酷刑的戰爭罪。現在，亞當?郎面臨著被送上國際軍事法庭的迫在眉睫的威脅。而這件事，在英國國內也引起了廣泛的關注。
爭議使得記者和示威者湧郎在島上的豪宅，郎跟他的妻子露絲，以及他的個人助理（兼情婦）阿梅利亞呆在那裡。隨著影子的槍手工作的展開，他開始發現郎的被捕不是一件簡單的政治事件，也不是郎一個人的過失。看起來，這好像是他的前任，麥克?艾爾故意捏造而杜撰的"真相"，而且麥克?艾爾也不是一個簡單的人物，他一直在暗地裡給中情局發送資料，"揭露"或者是"栽贓"前首相亞當?郎。而現在，這些蛛絲馬跡的證據，就藏在麥克?艾爾留下的手稿裡……
